Please answer the following questions to justify the prohibition of cannabis.
1: Millions of people use cannabis in the privacy of their own home causing harm to nobody else why should this concern the law?
2: With thousands of alcohol and tobacco related deaths every year and none attributed to cannabis how can cannabis prohibition be justified when alcohol and tobacco are legal?
3: Measures are being taken to clamp down on irresponsible binge drinking with great care being taken not to penalise the responsible drinker. Why are millions of responsible cannabis users being persecuted for the irresponsible actions of a minority?
4: The cannabis black market is a direct result of cannabis prohibition. Black market cannabis is often adulterated with various noxious substances which are normally far more harmful than any potential harm sustained from cannabis. There are no controls or regulations on the black market to protect the consumer. Millions of people regularly use cannabis despite prohibition. If cannabis prohibition is based on protection from harm please justify this argument for prohibition.
5: Alcohol and tobacco can only be bought by over 18’s. On the black market there is no age restrictions, a £10 note is all that is needed regardless of the buyer’s age. If cannabis prohibition is to protect the young please justify this argument for prohibition.
6: As a Class B drug, cannabis users face up to 5 years in prison for simple possession. The charge of possession signifies personal use only. When the maximum sentence for possession of a knife is only 4 years how can such a harsh sentence for personal use of cannabis (a victimless crime) be justified?
7: Please give any other reasons why you feel the persecution and prosecution of millions of people like myself, who break no other law is justified.
Thank you for your time.
